Maintaining Your Diet When At A Restaurant

People on diets tend to shy away from going out with family and friends to eat. They feel that eating a restaurant will blow their diet and they do not want to feel out of place ordering a plain salad.

People tend to forget that the restaurant is there to cook the food to your liking. You need to keep in mind that the portions that a restaurant serves, is most likely larger than is recommended.

Let's take a look at an Italian restaurant. They generally give hefty portions where their meals are concerned. A simple pasta dish, in all reality, can feed two to three people. A good habit to get into is to ask for a to-go box with your order.

This will allow you to put aside ˝ of your meal right away, helping you to avoid un-necessary over eating. Some restaurants will also have the same meal in a kid's portion so you may want to opt for the smaller portion right off the bat.

If the dish you order has a sauce that comes on it, you can ask to have the sauce on the side so you can avoid the extra calories. You do not have to lather your meal in the sauce to enjoy the flavor of it.

You can get the same effect by simply dipping your fork into the sauce prior to putting the food on your fork. You still get the same flavor but you will find that you will use maybe 1/3 of the sauce that comes with the meal.

If you are watching your sodium intake you may want to ask for salt free seasonings when the cook is preparing your food or you can simple ask for no seasonings to be added.

Restaurants offer soup and salad combos but keep in mind that their soups are packed full of sodium and that can lead to unwanted water retention. If you do order a salad, you can use the same trick for the dressing as you can with the sauce. Ask for the dressing on the side.

Eating out doesn't have to be a dreaded event. You just need to know what your limits are and you need to make healthy choices when you are away from home. Don't be afraid to ask to have the meal prepared just the way you want.

The cook will be more than happy to accommodate you if you are up front about what you can and cannot have. You will find that many restaurants are now offering entrees that are for certain diets such as weight watchers as well as low car diets.

When the meal is over you do not have to order dessert. It is more and more common for people to skip dessert after a meal. If you are a person who loves dessert then you can order it with a to-go box and just help yourself to a few bites.

This way, you do not over eat but you still get to satisfy your taste buds with the sweet treasure.
